Other ninja characters received pretty solid new designs that gave them more distinct personalities from one another, but Reptile continues to get the short end of the design stick game after game. While I completely understand the desire to make the ninja characters more distinct from one another to move away from the memory-saving palette swap nature of their 2D sprite origins, Reptile's redesigns tended to make him look less like an elite, secretive ninja and more like some disposable henchman to a cheesy 80's cartoon villain. With each subsequent game after the series' shift to 3D Reptile took on an increasingly reptilian appearance. 4.1 Red Cross Palette Swap 4.2 Removed Audio 4.3 Altered Sprites. In a game with split-screen, changing the screen palette would affect the other player's half-screen. It could also be used for water reflection. Starting with MK4, however, Ed Boon and team began to take Reptile's character design down a different path. Skullgirls is a 2D fighting game developed by Reverge Labs Lab Zero Games Hidden. Even as more palette-swap ninja characters were added in subsequent entries, Reptile remained my favorite of them all (although Smoke was always a close second). Although visually similar, palette swap characters may have very different moves and personalities. This was the coolest thing I'd ever seen as a kid, and it's still badass today. One of Waluigi's palette swaps has been interp reted as being inspired by either Super Mario Glitchy 4 or Brawl in the Family. Mario, Peach -> Shadow Queen, Bowser -> Dark Bowser, Mewtwo -> Charizard, Ryu -> Ken, Goku -> Piccolo. I would draw pictures of him in my notebooks, and green became my favorite color from then on. The game has its characters' palette swaps resemble other characters. The mystery surrounding Reptile and the novelty of there being a hidden character in a fighting game (at the time) made him incredibly appealing to me. I loved the character designs, the fatalities, the lore, the backgrounds, etc. I had already started to get into fighting games via Street Fighter 2 on SNES, but MK's digitized actor sprites and darker tone really captivated me like no other game had to that point.
